Why Trincomalee Should Be Your Next Beach Vacation Destination in 2024

Trincomalee is a beautiful coastal city located in the eastern part of Sri Lanka. Known for its stunning beaches, serene experiences like snorkeling, whale watching, and breathtaking sunrises, this city offers a perfect getaway. Despite its beauty, Trincomalee has a low population density compared to other cities in Sri Lanka.

In April this year, I had the chance to visit Trincomalee, and it was one of the most unforgettable and beautiful experiences of my life. I want to share why you should definitely visit Trincomalee too.

Stunning Beaches

I've visited many beaches across Sri Lanka, but I still haven't seen a coastline as crystal-clear and beautiful as the ones in Trincomalee. I can still remember the feeling I had when I first saw the beach, especially around the Trincomalee Fort area. I'll share one of my videos on youtube so you can get an idea of the beauty.

Here’s a list of beaches you must visit:

  • Beach Around Trinco Fort
  • Nilaweli Beach
  • Uppuveli Beach
  • Marble Beach

Marble Beach is located about 30 km from the city, and it’s accessible by a sandy path that feels like a peaceful road to tranquility. The beach aside from the road is peaceful, and the water is calm, almost like a dead sea.

Stunning Sunrises

You can catch an amazingly beautiful sunrise at any of these beautiful beaches in Trincomalee. It’s a must-see experience that will make you feel at peace.

Trincomalee Fort

If you love historical sites, you must visit Trincomalee Fort. There, you can see the famous Sri Konneshwaram Temple, the old fortifications, and the ancient war cemetery

.
Fort Entrance Of Trincomalee

Also, there’s a herd of deer living freely within the fort area. They are very friendly and approachable. Don't miss the Lover’s Leap viewpoint, which offers one of the most amazing views of the ocean. You might need to pay around 200 LKR for a ticket, but trust me, the view is worth much more.

Tip: Since the Konneshwaram Temple is a religious site, it’s advised to wear appropriate clothing (no sleeveless shirts or shorts). You will be provided a piece of cloth at the entrance if needed.

Whale & Dolphin Watching

You can experience whale and dolphin watching from May to October. Though I haven’t personally experienced it yet, it's a highly recommended activity, and here’s whale watching in trincomalee for more details.

 Snorkeling and Diving Spots

Pigeon Island is a great place for snorkeling and diving. To get there, you can take a boat from Nilaveli Beach. The trip to the island is guided by local instructors, and the full experience costs around 8,000 LKR per person.

Less Crowded

Unlike many other beaches in Sri Lanka, Trincomalee is a less crowded destination. If you're looking for a peaceful and serene getaway with fewer tourists, Trincomalee is the place to be.

Tips & Guide

Transport Both buses and trains are available from Colombo It's better to use the trains since it's more comfortable.

If you're traveling from Colombo, there’s a train at 9:30 PM from Pettah railway station, and you’ll reach Trincomalee around 7:00 AM. Ticket prices vary based on the class, and you can check the train timetable and bookings for your departure location via seatreservation.railway.gov.lk

Here’s the cost for traveling from Colombo to Trincomalee:

1st class: 2900LKR (airconditioned)

2nd class: 950LKR (for booked tickets 1800LKR)

3rd class:460LKR  (For booked tickets 1200LKR)

Within the area: You can rent scooters or bikes for around 2,500 LKR per day.

Packing Essentials

  • Sunscreen
  • Lightweight clothing for the warm climate

Accommodation: You can easily book accommodation via Booking.com for any budget, but be sure to check reviews first. I can’t personally recommend where we stayed since we weren’t comfortable with the place.

Food and Beverages: You can find small shops in the area selling both local and international food and beverages. Don’t forget to try local specialties, like Pittu, Italy, Those, and  watermelon juice

My motherland, Sri Lanka is known for its excellent hospitality, and once you arrive, many locals will guide and help you. The hotel owners, in particular, are very supportive and will assist you in every possible way.

I genuinely hope this information helps! Whether you're in Sri Lanka or traveling from abroad, don’t miss out on Trincomalee. It’s a destination worth experiencing!

Here's a short video I created after my visit. Hope you enjoy this!

Thank you & Happy journey!
